Last month our team took some time to have a look at one of the most popular .NET content management systems; DotNetNuke using Plesk application installer. Below we have put together a little intro into how easy it is to install and get going with DotNetNuke.

First step is to login to your Plesk control panel.

Next click on the ‘Applications’ tab at the top (navigation)

You can use the search window of the Applications screen to find DotNetNuke which will show you this screen

Now click on the install button on the right hand side of this screen to start the install process and you should go to a page for you to accept the T&C’s

Now enter the required install details for your new DotNetNuke install. If you get an error in regards to resources this maybe that you have run out of available SQL databases or the .NET version is too old. Contact your hosting provider and let them know. *DotNetNuke fully works with Host Media’s Windows hosting services.

Once you have entered all the required information you will see the DotNetNuke installer process through. When this has been completed you can then use the provided details to login to your admin portal area.

TIP: Make sure to take special note of the HOST username and password as DotNetNuke sets up two users when it first gets created. One is the ‘portaladmin’ and the other (username is normally your Plesk username) is the host admin. The host admin allows you to manage the DotNetNuke website a lot more than just the portaladmin such as install new extensions from the DotNetNuke website.

If you have any questions regarding the installer or our Windows hosting please contact our team.

Late last year we started making our 2013 plans for the services we would like to go forward more with and where to focus our efforts. The discussions were mainly in terms of the global locations and the suppliers we want to become our primary suppliers. We have decided to disband two locations, one in the United Kingdom and the second in the United States due to having multiply locations in both countries we wanted to focus more technology in just one data centre in each. Below is a list of moves we at Host Media are going forward with over the course of the next month:

Phoenix AZ, USA (Media/Railo/VPS) => Kansas City MO, USA

Hampshire, UK (Media/Railo/VPS) => Coventry, UK

This will be a large undertaking by the team but we will be working hard to make sure each client is informed of all changes to their hosting service. Many customers will not need to make any changes at all as the DNS services will be updated our end.

The first stage will be the migration of our Media services followed by our Railo hosting servers and finally our Virtual Private Server customers.

We are also planning to migrate those VPS clients using node: ALPHA (Location: DE/Germany) to other nodes in our racks due to hardware replacement to newer technology. A new Alpha node will later be setup for new customers to use.

As some of you maybe aware at present we are in the final stages of moving our Kloxo ColdFusion 9 clients to our larger cPanel ColdFusion 9 servers and hope to have this completed in the week. Email updates will be sent out this week with full details.

With these migrations we hope this will allow us to focus more on each service we provide as well as provide a better service and support to all our customers.

If you have any comments or questions please feel free to contact the management or the sales team using a support ticket.

Over the past year we have slowly moved away from using Kloxo control panel on our main shared and reseller hosting solutions to cPanel. The cPanel control panel provides a wider range of features including global DNS clustering which has already been enabled for all of our cPanel hosting solutions.

We will be opening support tickets to each client that has an account on the Kloxo CF9 server to work with them to manually migrate their websites data to their new cPanel account. Any customers that fail to respond within two weeks will have their data migrated for them and their websites tested the best we can. We will run backups of the Kloxo server the best we can but recommend all customers run backups to their local computers hard drives.

We hope this move from Kloxo to cPanel will benefit all our CF Kloxo customers.

Thank you.

Today at 11:46 (28.02.2013) we received details from Nominet UK that they will not be proceeding with the direct .UK domain extension.

One of the concerns we at Host Media put forth to Nominet was the availability to those who already have a .CO.UK (or other .UK) domain brand and if those who do will have priority on the .UK domain extension. For example we were thinking about our own rights to have the domain ‘hostmedia.uk’ as we already own the .co.uk version. These issues are highlighted in the email below.

Original Email:

“Following our Board meeting yesterday, we are not proceeding with our original proposal on ‘direct.uk’ but we will respond to feedback by looking at whether a revised proposal will address issues raised in the recent consultation.

We received extensive feedback from a wide range of stakeholders including formal and informal responses. We listened and carefully considered all the points made. All responses were available to the board, along with a report on the feedback that contained a summary of responses and analysis of the data, which can be seen on our website: http://www.nominet.org.uk/how-participate/policy-development/current-policy-discussions-and-consultations

It was clear from the feedback that there was not a consensus of support for the direct.uk proposals as presented, with some concerns cutting across different stakeholder groups. Although shorter domains (e.g. nominet.uk rather than nominet.org.uk) were considered desirable, many respondents felt that the release mechanism did not give enough weighting to existing registrants, and could lead to confusion if they could not obtain the corresponding domain.

The objective of raising trust/security was welcomed, but many disagreed with the proposed approach, suggesting that standards should be raised across the whole of the namespace. On individual security features, there was qualified support for options such as DNSSEC, but scepticism about whether the proposed trustmark would be effective. There was significant support for address validation, though some would like us to do more, and others would like us to do the validation process differently. There was clear support that the sale of domain names should be only through registrars who could meet a level of service and data quality.

As a result, we are going to explore whether it is possible to present a revised proposal that meets the principles of increasing trust and security and maintaining the relevance of the .uk proposition in a changing landscape.

Over the coming months, this work will explore:

A revised phased release mechanism based largely on the prior registrations of domains in existing third levels within .uk and in which contention between different applicants for the same domain name should be reduced or eliminated.

Measures to improve security across the whole of the .uk namespace. This would include increased focus on encouraging the adoption of DNSSEC.

A firm focus on registrant verification and some form of UK presence.

Further investigations into the impact on the SME sector.

An appropriate pricing model.

The Board plans to review progress at their June meeting, where they would decide whether there is an alternative option that addresses the concerns raised in the consultation. This would be subject to further consultation prior to any final decision being made.

Should the new shorter .uk suffix be introduced, Nominet has committed to continuing to support the existing third level domains (e.g. .co.uk).

While we need more time to work on the details of the revised proposal or release mechanism, in light of the high level of interest in this issue, we wanted to let everyone know our proposed next steps as soon as possible.”

When running any online hosting service a software firewall is key to help protecting your server(s) from being attacked if the hardware firewall fails to stop the attack.

With all our Linux services we recommend ConfigServer Security & Firewall which is a free software based firewall program. It also has an integrated cPanel addon which gets automatically added to cPanel once the installer is complete.

How to install

Installation is pretty simple and easily done with any SSH program such as Putty or Mac terminal (with SSH connection). Just run each line below to install the software:

rm -fv csf.tgz
wget http://www.configserver.com/free/csf.tgz
tar -xzf csf.tgz
cd csf
sh install.sh

Next, it is a good idea to test whether you have the required IPTables modules setup:

perl /etc/csf/csftest.pl

That is it, very easy install and works great with cPanel. If you have cPanel installed on your server just login to your WHM control panel and scroll to the bottom of the left hand side navigation to see the Firewall control panel. Make sure to change the setting from TEST to LIVE within the configuration screen.

If you have a server with us just open a support ticket and one of our staff will install ConfigServer Security & Firewall for you.

As some of you may know we are partnered with MaxMind, Inc to help prevent fraudulent orders from being processed by our system automatically. This system has worked very well up to now but with the increasing number of fraud orders being placed with smarter systems and remote machines from addresses near to stolen payment gateway logins we needed something more powerful. With this in mind we have now signed up to MaxMind Premium Fraud Protection. As well as this we have also put in place a new telephone order validation system for orders that have been detected as possible fraud and this validation is also on certain products and services that fraudsters appear to go after.

This improved service will also help those customers who place true and honest orders that get flagged as fraud to allow them to confirm their order with an easy automated telephone verification. This also means you will not need to contact our team to have your order activated. Of course if there are any issues or questions with your order verification then you can speak to a member of our sales team via a support ticket.

The system will only run the verification on your first order just as our current system does, if you are already customer this will not effect you.

We are working closely with companies such as MaxMind by passing fraudulent/bank charge-back data to these anti-fraud companies to benefit the hosting and online commercial industry.

We hope the improved security will benefit new and current customers by stopping abusers and fraud users from getting on our network.

If you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact the management team.

At AeonCube Networks and Host Media we have been moving our CFML code from tag based to cfscript for more performance and to keep up to date with coding in CFML. In doing so we found that when we have our cfquery’s we couldn’t simply add <cfif>/if() within our SQL code.

After testing and reading what others in the ColdFusion community suggested we came up with a way to do this and keep performance high. Below is a sample code to select data from a table but with argument options:

query function *FUNCTIONAME*(arguments){
	var q = new query();
	q.setDatasource(*DATASOURCENAME*);
	savecontent variable="local.sql"{
	WriteOutput("
	     SELECT *
	     FROM *TABLENAME*
	     WHERE id = :id
	");
	if (arguments.id2 != '') {
	 WriteOutput("AND id2 = :id2 ");
	}
	if (arguments.id3 != '') {
	 WriteOutput("AND id3 = :id3");
	}
	}
	q.setSQL(local.sql);
	q.addParam(name="id",value="#arguments.id",CFSQLTYPE="CF_SQL_INT");

If you run a cPanel server or VPS you should have received this email but as some people set their admin email addresses to a inbox that is not checked often we thought we would post the important cPanel/WHM update message here for you to read:

Important: New Information about cPanel & WHM 11.30, 11.32, and 11.34 Updates Now Available

Summary:

cPanel & WHM 11.30.7.4; 11.32.5.15; 11.34.0.11, which fixes multiple security issues, is now available for download.

cPanel has rated these updates as having important security impact. Information on security ratings is available at http://go.cpanel.net/securitylevels.

Description:

The Perl Storable module provides support for serialization and deserialization of Perl data structures. In cPanel & WHM this functionality is used for caching data to disk and transferring data between processes. In many areas this caching and interprocess communication crosses privilege separation boundaries. A local malicious user could use this behavior to inject code into serialized data structures, thus allowing for code execution and possibility of privilege escalation.

The Perl YAML::Syck module provides similar functionality as the Storable module. The version of YAML::Syck used in previous releases of cPanel & WHM allowed serialized data to be blessed into arbitrary packages as it was deserialized. This could be leveraged to perform unsafe actions in object destructors.

The version of Locale::Maketext used in previous releases of cPanel & WHM suffered from two flaws in the _compile() function which allowed authenticated users to execute arbitrary code by supplying specially crafted translatable phrases.

cPanel & WHM relies on the Crypt::Passwd::XS Perl module to perform password hashing. This module suffers from the same vulnerability disclosed in CVE-2012-2143 where passwords with the 0×80 character are truncated when hashed using the DES crypt algorithm. cPanel & WHM systems are configured by default to use the stronger MD5 and SHA512 crypt password hashing algorithms.

The version of Cpanel::Locale used in previous releases of cPanel & WHM included two date formatting functions that passed unsanitized user input to a subprocess shell. An authenticated attacker could use this functionality to execute arbitrary shell commands on the local system bypassing normal restrictions on local code execution.

These issues were discovered by various members of the Development and Quality Assurance teams at cPanel.

Solution:

We recommend updating your cPanel & WHM system as follows;

Update cPanel & WHM 11.30 to 11.30.7.3 or newer.
Update cPanel & WHM 11.32 to 11.32.5.14 or newer.
Update cPanel & WHM 11.34 to 11.34.0.10 or newer.
